FTAA for Beginners [Log In to Edit this Entry]
Description Summary of Curriculum: Developed for the campaign against the Free Trade Area of the Americas, this widely used workshop starts with NAFTA and on that foundation builds a picture of free trade agreements as economic governments of, by, and for transnational corporations. Particularly useful charts include:
-Corporate profit rate, 1952-2002 (a mind-blowing chart)
-What trade agreements do
-What is trade (goods, services, investment, speculation)
-Barriers to trade
-Effects of the FTAA on economy, environment, democracy, access
The best activities are:
Opening – one thing you know about NAFTA or one question you have about NAFTA
Chart/rap: trade isn’t just manufactures, it’s mostly services, capital flows, and speculation
Rap about the special NAFTA court that does end runs around nations’ democratic systems
The workshop kit includes charts, and handout packet, and a trainer’s guide. The link here only provides the guide. For the other materials go to www.faireconomy.org, click on Economics Education, Download Workshops, and FTAA for Beginners.
