The Growing Divide

Description
Summary of Curriculum: This workshop isn’t about immigration, it’s about the US economy and government policies that are increasing inequality. However, its activities and charts are a goldmine for labor educators who need to nail a specific point about US economic reality. Among the dozens of charts are:
-CEO vs worker pay
-The stock market, CEO pay, productivity, and average worker pay
-Who owns stock
-Rule changes since the 1970s
-Union density since the 1930s
-The Wheel of Misfortune (concentrated wealth turns into concentrated power and then they change the rules…)
-Tax breaks for the wealthy/tax hikes for the rest of us
-Taxes corporations pay vs taxes you pay

Good activities include Quintiles (different classes’ incomes grew together in the 1950s and 60s, then we grew apart in the 80s and 90s) and the Ten Chairs (how much the rich have and how they’re getting more).

The workshop kit includes charts and a handout packet, plus a trainer’s guide which you have to order from United for a Fair Economy. To download the kit go to http://www.faireconomy.org/econ/download_workshops.html, click on the workshop you want to download, and fill out a form.
