Closing the Racial Wealth Divide
[Log In to Edit this Entry]

Description
Summary of Curriculum: This participatory workshop looks at the way US governments have systematically created opportunities for whites to build wealth while blocking (or taking wealth from) African-Americans, Latinos, Asian and Native Americans. The core analysis is that the racial wealth gap is inherited, and that racial wealth inequality perpetuates past histories of exploitation. One great chart is the RWD Timeline which shows laws, wars, and government actions that took wealth from people or color and gave it to whites. For immigration workshops, this features some of the experience of Latinos and Asian-Americans, and also conceptualizes the economic relationship between different peoples of color in the US – how their experiences differ and how they coincide. There are good “step forward if the government policies favored your family / step back if they hurt you” activities and a useful section on homeownership as a crucial step in building wealth.

Other good charts show the racial gap in income, wealth, and how fast your family would run out of money if you lost your job. The workshop kit includes charts, and handout packet, and a trainer’s guide.
